Darryl Cheeks Obituary, Death Cause – Director Fragé and Mayor Baraka Declare the Demise of Sergeant Darryl Cheeks, Newark Police Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé and Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka regretfully announce the untimely death of 47-year-old Newark Police Sergeant Darryl A. Cheeks on Thursday, November 2, 2023. “I am incredibly saddened by Sergeant Cheeks’ unexpected passing. He was with me since my earliest days in office,” Mayor Baraka stated. “My sincere sympathies go out to his cherished wife, kids, and whole family.
My condolences go out to all of his coworkers who have witnessed personally his unwavering commitment to protecting Newark residents over the previous 17 years. The loss of Sergeant Cheeks serves as a reminder of the impermanence of life and the value of savoring each moment for its intended purpose. We are all motivated by him to prioritize one another and make a positive difference in the lives of people around us. Director Fragé stated, “The loss of Sergeant Cheeks is having a significant impact on the entire Newark Police Division and Department of Public Safety.”
In addition to being an exceptionally competent police supervisor, he was also a loyal public worker and a friend to everyone he worked with. We send his family our deepest thoughts for solace and tranquility. In March 2006, Sergeant Darryl Cheeks started working for the Newark Police Division. He worked in several different law enforcement units, including the Fugitive Unit, the Robbery Unit, Executive Protection, Medical Services, the 2nd Precinct in the North Ward, the 3rd Precinct in the East Ward, the 5th Precinct in the South Ward, and most recently the Licensing Unit. Sergeant Darryl Cheeks of the Newark Police Department has our sincere gratitude for his dedication to the city. I hope he finds peace.
