By now, everyone is familiar with the idea that Jaden Smith is very open about his gender expression and might be gay. Still, the headlines he caused by calling out Tyler the Creator as his boyfriend still have people wondering what's fact versus what might be fiction.
When it comes down to whether the pair ever dated, though, Tyler has never confirmed or denied the rumor. So is Jaden Smith gay, and did he really date Tyler? One fact about Tyler's past suggests that their public announcement was probably true.
Tyler The Creator Never Confirmed A Relationship
True, Tyler the Creator has not confirmed that he dated Jaden Smith. The pair have collaborated multiple times, have been seen out together, and share mutual friends. Those facts could add up to them dating, or just being platonic pals.
But what started fans wondering whether Jaden's declaration could have been more than just a joke between friends is something in Tyler's past. Specifically, things that Tyler himself has said.
Recently, of course, Tyler stated in an interview that "people get to believe whatever the [expletive] they want," and refused to answer any questions about his sexuality. Further, he capped that line of questioning with, "I'm just living my life, brother."
A couple of years before Jaden made the two of them a headline, Tyler said very different things.
Tyler The Creator Has Rapped About LGBTQ+ Topics
Tyler the Creator's lyrics are already a point of "evidence" in the discussion over whether he and Jaden Smith are/were a thing, because he's rapped lines about kissing white boys and hiding things from his friends a la Frank Ocean.
Part of the reason why fans weren't sure whether to laugh when Jaden called Tyler "my boyfriend" is because Tyler has had some pretty homophobic lyrics on his albums in the past. In fact, he used a specific homophobic slur exactly 213 times on his album 'Goblin,' confirmed GQ back in 2015.

At that time, though, Tyler was being quoted and discussed because he had just appeared in a rainbow-themed ad for a clothing line, holding hands with another guy. The article also included quotes from Tyler where he explained that the slur wasn't meant to describe someone's orientation, which kind of makes sense given the other tidbits journalists have unearthed over the years.
Tyler's Social Media History Holds Some Interesting Quotes
The 2015 clothing campaign clad in rainbow imagery was one thing. But direct tweets from Tyler the Creator saying that he "tried to come out" of the closet "like four days ago" circa 2015 are another.
Independent rounded up a handful of those tweets, which also include his response to Kendall Jenner tagging him to say "apparently we're dating"; Tyler responded, "Not possible, we're both gay." Another tweet from 2016 is a drawing by Tyler that features a rainbow-colored person asking "Is it safe?" while cracking open a door (to what appears to be a closet).

Given those quotes, and a handful of other off-the-cuff comments from Tyler (like his tweeting that Leonardo DiCaprio circa-1990 was "so beautiful my god"), it seems that the rapper is definitely not straight. Which suggests to fans that a relationship between him and Jaden Smith is entirely plausible.
Did Tyler The Creator And Jaden Smith Really Date?
Given Tyler the Creator's track record of being both controversial and subversive, it's not too far off to assume that he might actually be gay, or somewhere in the LGBTQ+ sphere, and that he was actually dating Jaden Smith when Jaden announced it.
Either way, the fact that both are very private about any relationships, whether speculated about or confirmed true (remember Kylie Jenner's foundation all over Jaden's face?), indicates that maybe they were dating, and Tyler didn't care to comment because, like he's said, he's just "living life."
For Jaden's part, people thought at first that his claims about Tyler being his boyfriend were just some kind of publicity move. After all, Jaden, even more than Tyler, has been the subject of headlines speculating about whether he's gay or not.

Besides that, there have been conversations about Jaden's other unconventional celeb behaviors, like wearing skirts in a women's clothing campaign and carrying a purse. But is Jaden Smith gay, and did he really date Tyler the Creator?
The facts seem to suggest it's possible that yes, Jaden Smith is gay (or somewhere on the LGBTQ+ spectrum) and dated (or is still dating) Tyler the Creator. The only problem is that when Jaden made the claim publicly, no one really believed him, and Tyler won't say enough about the rumored relationship for fans to make up their minds either way.
